TO BIGOTRY NO SANCTION: GEORGE WASHINGTON AND RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
WHAT:
One of the most important documents in American history - and especially America's early commitment to religious freedom - will be making its way from its previous home in Maryland, where it had been stored out of sight for more than a decade, to Philadelphia and its new home for the next 3 years, the National Museum of American Jewish History.
The letter, which is the centerpiece of an exciting new exhibit at the Museum opening June 29 - September 30, will be arriving by security truck to safely usher the priceless artifact into the building in preparation for its debut later this month.
Set to arrive between 4 and 5:30 pm, the letter will welcomed by:

Next to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, it may be the most important 337 words in American history, and beginning June 29, it will be on public display for the first time in decades - right here in America's birthplace. The letter, written to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island in August 1790, will form the heart of a new exhibit exploring the roots of religious freedom in America: TO BIGOTRY NO SANCTION: George Washington and Religious Freedom set to open to the public in time for the July 4 Independence Day celebrations. Exhibit artifacts include Washington's letters to the Quaker, Lutheran and Roman Catholic communities, the original Pennsylvania ratification of the Bill of Rights and a portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Charles Stuart, ca. 1800, on loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among other artifacts.
