PRINCE GEORGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/26/12 -- Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal support for Initiatives Prince George (IPG), demonstrating the Harper Government's commitment to strengthening trade and investment in Northern British Columbia.
Thanks to more than $418,000 in federal funding, and with help from local partners, IPG will deliver a three-year trade and investment program. The program will identify market opportunities with important trade potential and promote these opportunities, along with Prince George's benefits as a transportation hub, to both international and domestic investors. The program will also increase exports, stimulate the regional economy and help local businesses thrive and grow.
"Our Government is committed to creating jobs and growth by helping organizations like IPG capitalize on trade and investment opportunities," said Minister Yelich. "Canada's long-term prosperity depends on its ability to engage in global markets, and I'm pleased that through projects like this, we are creating an open, strong and resilient global economy."
Initiatives Prince George helps to support Prince George as a city that welcomes investment, promotes economic growth, and hosts a competitive business climate. Prince George is a key transportation hub, thanks to its position on the shortest trade route between Asia-Pacific and U.S. markets and its connections via air (YXS), land (Hwy 16 & 97), rail (CN) and sea (Port of Prince Rupert).
"On behalf of the City of Prince George, IPG is very appreciative of the federal government's support of our trade and investment program," said Heather Oland, Chief Executive Officer, IPG. "The funding allows Initiatives Prince George to deliver a robust trade and investment program that is geared toward facilitating the growth of Prince George's export oriented businesses particularly in the forestry, mining, oil and gas, agriculture, and transportation sectors."
