Nordic Mines AB: On Sunday 8th of July 2012 at Laiva gold mine, a minor leakage of paste (almost inert tailings) occurred at the paste area.

Press Release. July 8. 2012

The paste flowed out into a delimiting ditch, surrounding the paste area. The deviation was observed at 04:00 during a routine visit at the paste area. Immediately after the observation the paste was let out through another pipeline. This stopped the leakage out into the surrounding ditch. Most of the paste stayed inside the mining area, but a part of the suspended material flowed into a ditch leading out from the paste area. The paste has flowed along the ditch approximately 3000 meters.

Early in the morning the company reported the deviation to the Emergency Response Centre Administration. The authorities' concerned such as the police and the fire brigade immediately came to the site, as well as a representative from the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. Together with the authorities the company has agreed on what should be done to monitor the effects of the leakage to the environment.

A follow-up programme has been started and samples have been taken of the paste material and the water in the surrounding area. During the next coming days an action plan for what has to be done will be prepared together with the authorities. Taking into consideration that the amount of material coming out into the environment was small, the leakage was stopped quickly and the paste contains only small amount of harmful substances, Nordic Mines Oy is therefore of the opinion that the paste leakage will not have any significant impact on the environment.
