NEW YORK, Aug. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Move over Yankee Stadium and Citi Field! There's a whole new arena for New York Sports Fans to cheer. The New York Yankees, who today opened their home to a sea of red hats, joined Delete Blood Cancer, an initiative of DKMS Americas, in announcing the opening of the M. Harf Stadium, a place where New York sports fans can show their support and fight blood cancer together.

The new M. Harf Stadium is ready to welcome more sports fans than all the other stadiums and arenas in the tri-state area combined - boasting 350,000 seats waiting to be filled with "fans for life" in the NY Sports Fans vs. Blood Cancer campaign. Sports fans in the tri-state area are encouraged to join Delete Blood Cancer and show their support by claiming a seat to delete. This simple gesture will help spread the word that all it takes is all of us to Delete Blood Cancer. So where exactly is the stadium? Go to www.deletebloodcancer.org to reserve your seat today.

The M. Harf Stadium is named in memory and honor of Mechtild Harf, beloved wife of DKMS founder Peter Harf, who lost her battle with blood cancer in 1991. Mechtild's courage and dignity in the face of this disease inspired her husband and daughter Katharina, who have continued her fight against blood cancer for 21 years and counting. Their efforts have saved many thousands of lives to date.

"I remain in awe of the New York Sports fan," said Katharina Harf, Chief Inspiration Officer at DKMS. "Their ability to mobilize together around a cause is very heartwarming. My family and I are honored to stand alongside such passionate fans."

About DKMS
DKMS was founded in Germany in 1991 by Peter Harf and his wife's physician, Professor Dr. Gerhard Ehninger after Peter's wife, Mechtild, was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Peter was told that his wife's best chance at survival was a bone marrow transplant, but a donor could not be found within their family. Desperate to find a donor Peter Harf, along with family and an army of volunteers worked tirelessly to recruit 68,000 donors in only one year. Mechtild lost her battle with blood cancer. Consequently, Mechtild's family including her daughter Katharina, have spent their lives working to put survival in the reach of every blood cancer patient. The mission of DKMS is to lead the fight to defeat blood cancer by empowering people to take action, give bone marrow and save lives. We are the world's largest bone marrow donor center, with over 3.6 million registered donors. More than 31,000 of our donors have helped save lives by donating their bone marrow.
