Gerad Meteyer Foundation Committed to Helping Kids Manage Diabetes Five Years Later

PLYMOUTH, Mich., Aug. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Nearly five years ago, 34-year-old diabetic Gerad Heath Meteyer suddenly passed away as a result of a low blood sugar incident. Since then, his friends and family have dedicated their time and resources to helping kids and teens manage and live with Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes through a foundation named in Gerad's memory.

It is because of the work the Gerad Meteyer Foundation, created in 2009, has done and continues to do helping people who've been diagnosed with diabetes that it was a recent recipient of $1,000 through Community Financial Credit Union's "Summer of Sharing" program.

"Gerad never stopped working to manage his disease, and put even more effort into helping those he met who were diabetic as well," said Ron Meteyer, Gerad's father and former Northville High School teacher. "Since he passed, we have taken it upon ourselves to continue that mission and are extremely appreciative of the support allowing us to do so."

The foundation helps send kids and teens to Camp Midicha in Fenton, Michigan, an American Diabetes Association camp designed to support kids with Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes. Over the years, the foundation has been able to help send dozens of kids to camp where they learn to manage their disease.

"The Meteyer Foundation is a perfect answer to our question, 'What Good Could You Do With $1,000?'" said Sarah Cousineau, Community Financial Marketing Manager. "We're proud to continue our mission of supporting our local nonprofits."
