Hall joins political activist Tom Hayden for Luminaries Lecture Seriesabout 1968 Democratic National Convention, Chicago
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The Light Factory will open an exhibition called Out in the Streets: The Democratic National Convention, Chicago, 1968 on August 27, 2012. It includes the work of photographers Fred W. McDarrah, Ron Pownall, Burt Glinn, Art Shay, John Austad and Duane Hall who documented the struggle between protesters and police during the 1968 convention.
Out in the Streets will be on exhibit from August 27, 2012 through January 21, 2013 in The Light Factory's Knight Factory. To introduce Out in the Streets, The Light Factory will host an opening reception on Thursday, September 27, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission to the reception and exhibit is free and open to the public; donations are accepted. Duane Hall will join veteran activist Tom Hayden for a presentation of the Luminaries Lecture Series on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7pm; the location is to be announced. Hall and Hayden will discuss their extraordinary experiences at the 1968 DNC from their individual points of view-Hayden as an organizer for the National Mobilization to End the War, and Hall as a photographer who used a "shoot and run" style as he was clubbed by the Chicago police.

Through black-and-white photographic prints, Out in the Streets examines the cultural and political changes that came as a result of riots during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. It was a crucial point in the country's history and fueled the debate over the war in Vietnam. Out in the Streets provides an historic context for the 2012 DNC, which will occur while the exhibit is on display.
Born and raised in North Carolina, Duane Hall worked as a photojournalist for the Chicago Sun-Times when he covered the Democratic National Convention in 1968. He continued to work for the newspaper into the 1970s, winning numerous local, regional, and national photographic awards. Leaving Chicago, he returned to Siler City, North Carolina and began a free-lance career that took him all over the world covering wars, rebellions, and historic events for most major publications. He has photographed all of the U.S. Presidents since Lyndon Baines Johnson, world leaders including the Shah of Iran, Martin Luther King and Pope Paul VI.
The Hall and Hayden lecture will be the third installment in The Light Factory's distinguished lecture series called Luminaries: Artists Behind the Viewfinder, which recognizes masters in the fields of photography and filmmaking. The series will not only celebrate the individual artist, but will use that artist to expose the Charlotte community to the aesthetic excellence of fine art and provide learning opportunities about the artistic process.
