ECC Wins $400 million Water Rehabilitation Project in Ghana

BURLINGAME, Calif., Sept. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --ECC was awarded a $400 million contract to upgrade and rehabilitate the national water system in Ghana for the Ghana Water Company, Ltd. (GWCL). This project is financed by a U.S. Export-Import Bank facility to the Government of Ghana. Partners to ECC under the contract include General Electric Company, who will provide technology and equipment, as well as Ghanaian contractor, ELS Ltd. The U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Donald Teitelbaum, among others, attended the contract signing ceremony this week.

"ECC is proud to lead such an important project for the Government and people of Ghana," commented Richard Ebel, ECC Vice President. "This effort will provide state of the art technology from GE to the highest priority areas of need through a partnership between our team and the Ghana Water Company Ltd."

The contract spans the eight main regions of Ghana. The technology being provided by GE will give the GWCL the ability to improve performance and product quality by reducing operating costs and by extending equipment life in areas where clean water distribution is limited or restricted. Matthew K. McLean of Endsight Consulting said that we chose to work with the government of Ghana because, "We identified Ghana as the most promising place to do business-especially in water infrastructure where we can have the largest impact to help the people of Ghana with clean water." The team will utilize an efficient, integrated modular approach that will be capable of delivering these systems effectively to all areas of the country.

"An important aspect of this project is capacity-building," continues Mr. Ebel. "We are not just executing a project. Our goal is to strengthen the capabilities of Ghanaian engineers and workers by transferring the technology, knowledge, and skill set necessary to allow them to continue to maintain the systems long after the project is complete and to be able to collect revenue from the water to provide sustainable operations for many generations."

The project is set to begin this year and is scheduled for completion in 2018.
