BRAGG CREEK, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/14/12 -- Today, the Honourable Ted Menzies, Minister of State for Finance, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, together with the Honourable Ric McIver, Minister of Alberta Transportation, announced government support towards the construction of a new potable water distribution system in the Hamlet of Bragg Creek.
"By investing in this initiative, the Harper Government is helping to ensure that the residents of Bragg Creek have access to safe and reliable water services for years to come," said Minister Menzies. "Investments such as this are a reflection of our Government's continued commitment to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity here in Alberta, and across Canada."
The Governments of Canada and Alberta will each invest $1 million, through the Canada-Alberta Building Canada Fund - Communities Component program, towards the installation of a piped-distribution network to transport high-quality treated potable water from the recently constructed treatment facility in Bragg Creek. Additionally, Rocky View County will contribute to the balance of the estimated $3.15 million construction project.
"This project is an excellent example of the Alberta government's priority of investing in families and communities," said Minister McIver. "In addition to supporting public safety, a reliable long-term supply of drinking water will also attract people and investment to the region."
Once completed, the distribution system may provide residents, who currently rely on shallow wells or trucked deliveries for their water needs, with a local supply of safe drinking water. In addition to creating short-term construction employment, this initiative will also help to increase both the efficiency and reliability of the community's water system.
"We are very appreciative to receive the support to provide a local resource for water distribution," said Reeve Rolly Ashdown, Rocky View County. "Having access to safe, clean water will greatly improve the quality of life for the community of Bragg Creek."
Under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund (BCF), the Government of Canada has invested in important projects across the West with matching contributions from the western provinces. Thousands of Alberta residents across the province are now enjoying the benefits of this significant investment to Canada and Alberta's public infrastructure.
