The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Inc., names Editor for JBJS Case Connector

NEEDHAM, Mass., Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Inc., (JBJS, Inc.) is pleased to announce the appointment of Marc Swiontkowski, MD, as Editor, JBJS Case Connector.

Dr. Swiontkowski, Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota and CEO of TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Bloomington, IL, received his medical degree from the University of Southern California and completed his orthopaedic residency at University of Washington. He completed a Fellowship in orthopaedic research at the Laboratory for Experimental Surgery in Davos, Switzerland.

Having served on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) since 1995, he is uniquely poised to lead this new endeavor. "I am extremely pleased that Dr. Swiontkowski has become the Editor for JBJS Case Connector online," stated Dr. Tolo, Editor-in-Chief of JBJS. "His dedication to supporting and improvingour Journalover the past several years has been exemplary as Deputy Editor for Trauma and Outcome Studies. His insight, ideas, and skills are just what JBJS Case Connector needs as it becomes an increasingly important information source and early warning system for orthopaedic surgeons."

JBJS Case Connector is a new online database designed to assist orthopaedic surgeons in the search for precedents, connections, and trends. Using this unique tool, surgeons can find the commonalities between cases and filter case information by important variables. JBJS Case Connector connects thousands of orthopaedic case reports by symptoms, conditions, treatments, and demographic details to empower surgeons to find cases similar to theirs and to mine the database to reveal emerging trends and identify patterns, distinguishing between truly rare cases and repeated, related instances of a larger problem.

Commenting on his new role, Dr. Swiontkowski stated, "I was delighted to be selected as Editor of JBJS Case Connector working with Editor-in-Chief Vern Tolo to build a new tool to enhance patient care for Orthopaedic patients with rare conditions or unusual complications. We are endeavoring to use the catalogue of JBJS case reports, using search tools under the direction of publisher Kent Anderson, to enable treating physicians in utilizing the more than 3000 cases to help in their treatment decisions. We will be communicating with the Orthopaedic community this new vision for the use of this repertoire of experience so that we can increase the number of submissions and further expand the usefulness of JBJS Case Connector in patient care. I feel that the vision of improved care for patients with these unusual problems is more than worth the time and effort it will take on the part of myself, the JBJS staff, and the orthopaedic community."
