The 2012 Annual NEDA Conference, "What About Us?: Diversity and Complexity in Eating Disorders," will bring together professionals, researchers, educators, people in recovery and families to connect and learn from one another. Those attending can choose sessions from six tracks. The workshop by Dr. Weltzin and Dr. Fitzpatrick on Friday, October 12 at 4:30 p.m. - "Exercise and Eating Disorders: Addiction, Anxiety or Healthy Coping?" - will address psychological models of fitness activities for eating disorder patients, as well as assessment and treatment approaches.

"This conference features a variety of educational presentations," Dr. Weltzin said. "It's a wonderful opportunity to learn more about eating disorders and the scope of treatments available. Our workshop will help clinicians and families to understand 'excessive exercise' as a symptom of eating disorders." He added that the session will also discuss different models of excessive exercise relative to addiction, compulsions and lifestyle choices, as well as present strategies for treating excessive exercise in men and women.

Rogers' Place in the Industry
A nationally respected leader in the treatment of eating disorders, Rogers Memorial Hospital provides evidence-based care for children, adolescents and adults. The staff works with each patient to achieve nutritional stability, identify and correct errors in thinking, and address obstacles to recovery. Specialized programs are aimed at getting to the core issue through custom, hands-on therapy by some of the country's leading eating disorders specialists. In addition, Rogers offers the country's only specialized residential eating disorders treatment for adults with co-occurring anxiety disorders and the hospital was also the nation's very first provider to offer exclusive eating disorders treatment for men and boys. Family education and involvement is a key component. Overseen by three full-time board-certified psychiatrists who specialize in treating eating disorders (Dr. Weltzin, Dr. Tracey Cornella Carlson and Dr. Brad Smith), Rogers' treatment team works to address each patient nutritionally and psychologically, as well as to manage medical issues common to eating disorders.

Rogers is also recognized for publishing its research studies and outcomes. In fact, Dr. Weltzin and his colleagues have recently published an article in Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention. Rogers' Eating Disorder Center conducts ongoing studies to evaluate program effectiveness and increase knowledge in the field of eating disorders. Patients who agree to participate are asked at admission and discharge to complete a series of questionnaires. Follow-up calls on progress are made periodically after discharge to track their continuing recovery. Study findings are presented at national and international conferences and published in peer-reviewed medical literature.

As an exhibitor and Silver Sponsor, Rogers Memorial Hospital is committed to supporting NEDA's mission to help individuals and families affected by eating disorders and serve as a catalyst for prevention, cures and access to care. The hospital has had a long history with NEDA, starting as one of the original sustaining sponsors when the organization was called Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention (EDAP) in the mid 90s and continuing to partner since it joined forces with the American Anorexia and Bulimia Association (AABA) in 2001.
