Summary: | 109 professional truck drivers will compete in the New Mexico Truck Driving Championships on Saturday, April 20th. Reporters will have the opportunity to sit in the driver's seat of a big rig - and see first-hand what skills are needed to navigate an obstacle course. Reporters will have an opportunity to follow competitors through the competition course. The state truck driving championships are open to the public. |

What: | Truck drivers will compete on Saturday, challenging their driving skills, and knowledge of safety, equipment and the industry. By 9:30 a.m., drivers will head to the competition course, which recreates real world obstacles that drivers encounter daily, such as a rear and/or front line stop, a scales stop, a right or left turn, parallel parking, or straight line driving through a diminishing clearance. Drivers will also be tested on their ability to identify and name vehicle defects during the Pre-Trip Inspection portion of the competition, as well as through knowledge of safety, security, fire safety, first aid, and health and wellness during a written exam. There are nine classes of competition, including 3-axle; 4-axle; 5-axle; flatbed; 5-axle sleeper; step-van; straight truck; tanker and twins. |
