George Brown College Announces Celebration of Leadership in Canadian Sports Business 5 to Watch Award Winners

TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/28/13 -- Editors Note: There is a photo associated with this press release.

George Brown College is pleased to announce the recipients of the second annual 5 To Watch Awards: A Celebration of Leadership in Canadian Sport Business, in recognition of the five most influential and accomplished Canadians under the age of 40 in the sports business and marketing sectors. The recipients are as follows:

-- Norm O'Reilly, Associate Professor of Sports Business, University of
    Ottawa
-- Chris Armstrong, Senior Vice President, Wasserman Media Group
-- Matt Shearer, Vice President & General Manager, Europe, Middle East,
    Asia, Under Armour
-- Mark Silver, Head of Digital, TSN
-- Kyle McMann, Vice President of Partnership Marketing, National Hockey
    League

Presented by George Brown College in partnership with The Globe and Mail, the awards recognize young executives who have demonstrated significant success early in their career and are poised to become the next generation of industry leaders. Nominees were selected based on a variety of factors including extraordinary business accomplishments and 'off the job' contributions such as mentorship, volunteer work and philanthropy. The awards also provide $25,000 towards student bursaries in George Brown's Centre for Business.

"With the support of leading business organizations and senior executives, the 5 to Watch Awards are now established as an important national recognition program for the sports, business and communications sectors. Focusing on the theme of mentorship, we continue to recognize emerging executives while raising critical funds for student bursaries in one of Canada's leading post-graduate business programs - the Sport & Event Marketing program at George Brown College," said Mike Fenton, Volunteer Co-Chair, and Executive Director, West Park Healthcare Foundation.

The awards ceremony included keynote addresses on the value of mentorship by noted broadcaster Brian Williams O.C., Mark Cohon, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League, Chairman and CEO of the Women's Tennis Association Stacey Allaster and Orlando Magic's Andrew Nicholson.

"The event was outstanding. Too often as Canadians we fail to celebrate and learn from our accomplishments as we prepare for the future. Not only has George Brown done that, they successfully illustrated the role mentoring has played in the lives of the speakers. Long overdue. Well done George Brown College. Thrilled to have been involved," said Brian Williams, O.C., Host, TSN.

Announced on May 16, 2013, at a ceremony at George Brown's new Waterfront Campus, the awards were voted on by a panel of leading sports marketers and business influencers including representation from Founding Partners: BMO Financial Group, Canadian Football League, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, SDI Marketing, TSN and presenting partner, The Globe and Mail.

Past winners include Adam Ashton, Senior Vice President, Business Operations, Bell Media; Rachel Lewis, Chief Operating Officer, Vancouver Whitecaps FC; Shawn Redmond, Vice President, Programming and Marketing, TSN; Alyson Walker, Executive Director, Marketing Partnerships, Canadian Olympic Committee; and Jeff Deline, Senior Director Corporate Partnerships, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
