RIO DE JANEIRO, July 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Forum of the Americas, headed by Mario Garnero, held in partnership with the Italian Ministry of the Environment, a number of events during the 2013 World Youth Day (WYD), which took place in Rio de Janeiro between 23th and 28th of July.
Commitment to safeguard creation
On July 22, was issued the document The Young Guardians of Creation in World Youth Day, which represents a call to all nations, their governments and their public, to adopt concrete actions capable of producing a culture of safeguarding creation as the great task of all mankind. Drafted by a committee formed by the John Paul II Foundation, the Italian Ministry of the Environment, the Local Organizing Committee for WYD Rio 2013 and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, the document aims to promote greater visibility into sustainability issues within the religion, especially among young Christians from around the world.
Recycling centers and recharge of cell phones with sun's energy
A project of selective waste collection was implemented during WYD by the Italian Ministry of Environment, the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the John Paul II Foundation for Youth and the Forum of the Americas. The action was concentrated on Copacabana beach with the installation of 12 recycling centers called 'ecopoints', with volunteers for the collection and sorting of waste generated during the event.
Each 'ecopoint' had also a totem composed of photovoltaic panels that turned the sun's energy into electricity so that pilgrims could recharge cell phones and other electronic equipment.
Mario Garnero's relations with the Vatican began in 1983, when he handed over a letter signed by 700 Brazilian businessmen to Pope John Paul II. The text was a commitment to fight for justice in the land question and, since then, Garnero became an important spokesman of the Brazilian business community at the Vatican.
