PITTSBURGH, Aug. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- On the first day of classes, new Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) President Subra Suresh released a video message to students, faculty, staff and alumni around the world.

The video extends a special welcome to those who, like Suresh and his family, are new to the university community.
Suresh met with first-year students and parents last week as part of CMU's orientation program in Pittsburgh. In his address to students and parents, the president emphasized the university's ability to provide an exceptional education for students and a supportive environment for new ideas.
"If you look at all the grand challenges that face the world today, they are not only technology challenges, but also human challenges. CMU is uniquely positioned to bridge that gulf between technology on the one hand and humanity on the other, to solve these problems," Suresh said.
CMU's weeklong orientation experience is designed to acclimate students to academic and residential life at the university, as well as to engage students in learning about the Pittsburgh region.
Approximately 1,430 students make up this year's first-year class in Pittsburgh, and about 100 students are part of the incoming class at CMU's campus in Doha, Qatar.
