CONCORD, N.C., Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- On Sunday, September 22, Global Rallycross returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Sylvania SilverStar zXe Global Rallycross, the penultimate round of the 2013 season. The race will be broadcast live on Sunday, September 22 at 4:30 PM ET on ABC.
After racing in the CMS tri-oval last season, Global Rallycross will compete on The Dirt Track at Charlotte for the first time on Sunday. The track features a specially adapted layout that extends past the normal walls of the dirt oval.
Drivers scheduled to compete include Global Rallycross points leader and five-time 2013 race winner Toomas Heikkinen; 2012 Charlotte podium finishers Tanner Foust and Stephan Verdier; 24-time X Games medalist Dave Mirra, who will make his debut in the Prodrive-built Mini this weekend; and other GRC stars like Travis Pastrana, Ken Block, Brian Deegan, and more.
Sunday's event will be the fourth and final round of the Sylvania SilverStar zXe Cup, a $20,000 points championship within the full nine-race series schedule. Heikkinen maintains a 20-point lead over Block in the standings, and can clinch both the zXe Cup and overall driver's championship on Sunday.
GRC Lites will also compete in the fifth round of their six-race 2013 season. Joni Wiman, winner of the first four GRC Lites events, will attempt to defend his winning streak against a strong crowd including fellow X Games medalists Sebastian Eriksson and Mitchell deJong.
