New IHRSA European Health Club Report Provides Insight & Analysis from Market Leaders; Profiles 111 Companies, 32 Markets, Industry Trends

BOSTON, Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- As over 500 health club industry leaders from 36 countries gathered in Madrid for the IHRSA European Congress, IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association released The IHRSA European Health Club Report: Size & Scope of the Fitness Industry. This market research, sponsored by FIBO, Les Mills, miha bodytec, and Ojmar, reports on the health club industry in leading and emerging markets in Western and Eastern Europe as well as Russia.

"This report is the most comprehensive examination of the European health club industry available," said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of global products. "With insights derived from interviews with more than 40 industry leaders, the report is the ultimate reference on the club industry in Europe for club operators, developers, analysts, lenders and investors."

Roughly 44 million members frequent 48,000 clubs in Europe, where revenues are an estimated euro 25 billion. Emerging markets in Eastern Europe account for roughly euro 1.1 billion in health club revenue, 6,900 health clubs, and 2.3 million members.

The report also highlights industry trends. "Indoor Cycling is incredibly popular, especially in Scandinavia," says Hans Muench, IHRSA Director of Europe. "Group exercise in its various forms is still strong, and the new trend of virtual classes is making inroads." Another accelerating trend that health clubs are addressing is the total-member experience-not just the workout, but pre- and post-workout activities.

The European Health Club Report includes:

  • Industry Overview - the economy, impact of VAT, leading and struggling markets, drivers for growth;
  • Reports on 32 distinct markets - in-depth analysis and interviews of club operators and experts from Austria, Benelux, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The U.K., Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey;
