IRO Compensation in 2013 - Rivel Unveils Most Comprehensive Database of IR Salaries

SOUTHPORT, Conn., Dec. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Rivel Research Group today announced the release of IRO Compensation in 2013, a report highlighting salary information for over 1,500 investor relations executives from 867 companies in North America and Europe. Building upon the popular 2010 study, which was the largest of its kind at the time, Rivel more than doubled the number of data inputs. By doing so, Rivel has provided a comprehensive and detailed look at what leads to higher levels of compensation for investor relations executives.

Findings from the recently published report include:

  • Base salaries of IROs in North America and Europe rose 3% in 2013
  • The median base salary for an IRO in North America is over $200,000 and €150,000 in Europe
  • IROs in North America receive cash bonuses of $70,000 yearly (median); IROs in Europe receive a yearly bonus of nearly €36,000 (median)
  • 71% of IROs in North America 54% in Europe are very satisfied with their current positions
  • A double-digit premium is given to an IRO's base salary if they have obtained an MBA

While total compensation figures are clearly the most popular findings in the research, other pertinent elements related compensation are examined, including the most persuasive way to increase pay, how IROs performance is judged, IR budgets, the top goals for IR departments and how to navigate the salary review.

COMPREHENSIVE DATABASE OF IR SALARIES

By virtually doubling the number of data points over 2010, Rivel has created a vast and unparalleled database of salaries that allows investor relations executives to receive highly customizable reports that uniquely define salary, bonus and stock option averages within any combination of parameters deemed significant to their current situation (e.g., market cap, sector, industry, years of IR experience, region, title and education level, among others).

Importantly, Rivel's database allows for compensation comparisons on an industry level, a filter not available to IROs in the past. Now, for example, a Vice President level IRO at a mid-cap software firm in New York with an MBA and seven years of IR experience can see how his/her peers are compensated. By adding the industry element, IROs can receive a more accurate and complete comparable as opposed to broader generalizations based solely on generic sector data.

"Discussing salaries is never easy, but along with the overarching compensation research, these highly custom reports allow IROs to confidently present their case for a raise to their management," said Brian Rivel, President of Rivel Research Group. "In the past, compensation studies have been limited to offering detail on the market cap, sector and regional levels but nothing on the industry level. With the nearly 1,500 data points we collected this year, we are able to get quite creative with how far we drill down on compensation for clients and still have full confidence in the data."
