FPL warns customers about a new nationwide email scam targeting utility customers

JUNO BEACH, Fla., Jan. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) today announced that it is alerting its customers to a new nationwide scam that specifically targets them through email. FPL customers have reported receiving bogus email bill statements from legitimate utility companies, such as Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). These companies are warning their customers and others to delete these suspicious emails immediately and not click on any links.

"Protecting our customers and their personal account information is of utmost importance," said Marlene Santos, vice president of customer service for FPL. "Just as we make it a priority to protect customer information and keep our systems secure, we urge our customers to do the same and be vigilant in protecting themselves and always use caution when opening emails. At the end of the day, we want to ensure no FPL customer becomes a victim."

FPL will never send emails that threaten or require immediate action to provide personal information.

FPL also reminds its customers to:

  • Ignore suspicious requests for personal information such as bank account numbers, user names and passwords, credit card numbers or Social Security numbers
  • Delete all suspicious emails that require immediate action to verify or provide personal information

FPL customers can find additional tips to protect against scams by visiting:FPL.com/protect

If customers believe they have been victimized by this scam, FPL encourages them to report it online to the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force at stopfraud.gov.
