Local Elementary School Coach Cooks His Way to New Playground Courtesy of LG Electronics USA

ARLINGTON, Texas, April 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Silver Creek Elementary School of Azle, Texas earned a physical fitness Project Fit America grant from LG Electronics USA after winning the LG Coaches Cook-Off', which took place outside of AT&T Stadium, at the Infiniti Tip-Off Tailgate', during the NCAA® Final Four® weekend. The grant will be used for new indoor and outdoor physical fitness facilities, a curriculum and onsite training to help physical education teachers incorporate them in their lessons.

Teacher Trey Shearer from Silver Creek Elementary School secured the victory for his school by cooking the tastiest pizza of the group. Shearer faced off against coaches from three other local elementary schools selected by Project Fit America for the competition.

With assistance from Baylor University Head Men's Basketball Coach Scott Drew and Texas A&M Head Men's Basketball Coach Billy Kennedy, members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), each local coach was asked to make a custom pizza, using a protein, vegetable and cheese of their choice and a full suite of high-performance appliances in the LG Kitchen including LG's award-winning "Door-in-Door'" ENERGY STAR® certified French-door refrigerator; electric range with EasyClean' technology; high performance five-burner, 30-inch radiant cooktop; microwave oven, and ENERGY STAR certified TrueSteam' Dishwasher.

The dishes were judged by an expert panel that included college and professional basketball legend Clyde Drexler, Head of Marketing, LG Electronics USA, Dave VanderWaal and James Music from the culinary school at the Art Institute of Dallas.

"Trey has exemplified what it means to Do Game Day Right," said William Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics USA. "Silver Creek Elementary School is more than deserving of this grant. With LG, it's all possible, and we're pleased to be able to help students become more active for years to come."

The three other North Texas schools competing for the grant were Cesar Chavez Elementary School, Central Elementary School and West Elementary School. The four final schools were selected through a grant process implemented by Project Fit America, which reviewed dozens of entries from schools in the North Texas area. While Sliver Creek Elementary School will receive the LG Project Fit grant, all four schools will receive a variety of LG products, including ENERGY STAR certified computer monitors, HDTVs and refrigerators.

"After reading and reviewing the applications from each of these schools, it was clear that they were all deserving of the LG physical fitness grant and each would serve as an excellent model and pilot school for the North Texas region," said Stacey Cook, executive director at Project Fit America. "Each school's application reflected their commitment to their students and their health. They were all great sports at the LG Coaches' Cook-Off, and we're looking forward to the groundbreaking at Silver Creek Elementary School later this year."
