Vancouver Taxi Association Welcomes Opportunity to Serve More People with Disabilities with New HandyDART Funding

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/24/14 -- The Vancouver Taxi Association welcomes the additional funding for taxis announced by TransLink Friday afternoon, and stands ready to meet the unique needs of HandyDART customers as a result of its "Ask-Listen-Act" driver training program launched earlier this year.

"The Vancouver Taxi Association is committed to providing safe and consistent service for customers with disabilities," said Carolyn Bauer of the Vancouver Taxi Association. "More than 1,000 Vancouver taxi drivers have completed the 'Ask-Listen-Act' training program, our customer feedback has been positive, and we're helping seniors and people with disabilities live more independently."

"The Vancouver taxi companies -- Black Top Checker Cabs, MacLures Cabs, Vancouver Taxi, and Yellow Cab -- commend this expansion of the HandyDART system, and look forward to working with TransLink and their contractor to make these additional taxi rides available to HandyDART customers as quickly as possible."

The "Ask-Listen-Act" program was launched in January 2014 by the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Taxi Association and the BC Coalition of People with Disabilities and was the first of its kind in Canada.

The program was developed in consultation with several groups, including:

-- City's Persons with Disabilities Advisory Committee
-- Seniors Advisory Committee
-- Council of Senior Citizens Organizations of BC (COSCO)
-- Access for Sight-Impaired Consumers
-- GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre

The Vancouver Taxi Association are consistent knowledgeable pacesetters within the taxi industry in British Columbia. We are visible, accountable and inspire other taxi companies with our leadership. The Vancouver Taxi Companies, including Black Top Checker Cabs, MacLures Cabs, Vancouver Taxi and Yellow Cab have been voted the best in Canada and ranked 8th overall in the world by Hotels.com.
