AGU Science Policy Conference to Address How Scientific Discovery Can Inform Public Policy

WASHINGTON, DC

WHO:The American Geophysical Union (AGU) will host hundreds of scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders for its third annual Science Policy Conference. AGU is a not-for-profit society representing more than 62,000 Earth and space scientists in 142 countries.

WHAT:AGU's Science Policy Conference offers a platform for scientists and policy makers to collaborate with community leaders on a wide range of challenges facing the American economy, public safety, and national security. The conference will feature United States Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and dozens of other eminent speakers from government, scientific institutions and societies, universities, environmental organizations, industry, and agriculture, in tracks, covering: Climate Preparedness, Disaster Preparedness, Elements of a National Water Policy, Climate Change Energy Outlook, Flooding Risks, and 21st Century Resources. Its two cross-cutting plenaries and nearly 20 individual sessions, include:

  • Plenary, Policy Perspectives: The Future of Science in the U.S. Congress: Panelists - U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.-4th); U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.-8th); and U.S. Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calf.-52nd).
  • Plenary, The Business of Science: Is Public Investment Driving Private Innovation?: Opening remarks by Sally Jewell, U. S. Interior Secretary. Panelists - Kate Gordon, Executive Director, Risky Business; Tom Kimbis, Vice President, External Relations, Solar Energy Industries Association; and Peter Marquez, Vice President for Global Engagement, Planetary Resources and former space advisor for presidents Barack Obama and George W.
