Statement on Rebuild by Design by Nancy Somerville of American Society of Landscape Architects

WASHINGTON, June 2, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nancy Somerville, Hon. ASLA, executive vice president and CEO of the American Society of Landscape Architects, issued the following statement regarding the announcement of winners of Rebuild by Design, a multi-stage regional design competition to promote resilience.

Launched in the summer of 2013, the Rebuild by Design competition has produced regional, cross-disciplinary collaboration among state and local governments, international design teams, educational institutions, and the public. The competition is one of the initiatives of President Obama's Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and has taken place in partnership with the Municipal Art Society, NYU's Institute for Public Knowledge, Regional Plan Association, and Van Alen Institute.

"The American Society of Landscape Architects is pleased that landscape architects are front and center in the winning projects selected in the Rebuild by Design competition.

Landscape architecture is where nature meets the built environment. The landscape architects on the winning teams are providing innovative, sensible, and effective solutions for helping communities adapt to climate change. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, their contributions will improve the resiliency of coastal communities that are still vulnerable to the unpredictable impacts of climate change and rising sea levels.

This is an exciting opportunity for landscape architects and other designers that has the potential to guide all future development."
