UTC Aerospace Systems celebrates delivery of 10,000th set of inlet and fan cowls for Boeing 737

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW-- UTC Aerospace Systems' Aerostructures business marked a major milestone today when it delivered its 10,000th set of inlet and fan cowls for a Next-Generation 737 to Boeing. The nacelle system components were delivered from their final assembly site, Aerostructures' Foley, Alabama, original equipment facility. The nacelle components will be installed on a CFM56-7 engine made by CFMI. The Aerostructures business began producing inlet and fan cowls for the 737 in 1995. UTC Aerospace Systems is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

"In reaching this significant milestone in our long-term relationship with Boeing on this airplane platform, we're marking 19years of providing 737 nacelle components to Boeing," said Aerostructures President Marc Duvall. "We set a record last year by delivering 444 shipsets of inlets and fan cowls. We'll break that record this year with 491 planned deliveries, and are scheduled to deliver inlets and fan cowls for 501 airplanes in both 2015 and 2016."

Aerostructures sites in Riverside and Chula Vista, California; Mexicali, Mexico; and Foley, Alabama, used the following materials to produce the 10,000 sets of inlets and fan cowls:

  • 67 million fasteners
  • 1,612 tons of aluminum
  • 539 tons of titanium
  • 600,000 cubic feet of honeycomb core

In addition to setting quantitative milestones, the nacelle components from UTC Aerospace Systems - Aerostructures have many important distinctions for Boeing and its airline customers.

"We have a record of 100 percent on-time, high-quality delivery to Boeing," said Jim Pollock, Aerostructures vice president of Boeing Programs. "In addition, our nacelle components have a 100 percent dispatch reliability record for the hundreds of airlines worldwide that fly the 737."

Boeing is scheduled to deliver its 5,000th Next-Generation 737 in late July. The 737 became the first-ever commercial jet airplane to surpass the 10,000-order milestone in July 2012. A 737 takes off or lands somewhere in the world every two seconds, according to Boeing.

The Aerostructures business also provides nacelle systems for other Boeing airplanes, including the Boeing 767 equipped with General Electric engines and the 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners equipped with both Rolls-Royce and General Electric engines. Aerostructures' designed and produced nacelles are supported by a global network of maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities offering more than a million square feet of shop space, as well as a worldwide spares network, and 24/7 technical support.
