Morrison & Foerster Names New Co-Chair Of Global Privacy And Data Security Practice

- Andrew Serwin is a recognized authority on cybersecurity, a core focus for MoFo's expanding global privacy and data security practice

NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --Morrison & Foerster announced that partner Andrew Serwin has been named co-chair of the Global Privacy and Data Security Group. As co-chair, he will work closely with partner Miriam Wugmeister to lead the firm's rapidly growing, top-ranked practice. Ms. Wugmeister has also expanded her leadership role within the firm.

MoFo's privacy practice is one of the most highly rated and recommended among law firms worldwide, handling cutting-edge issues such as the largest global data security incidents, Big Data, the Internet of Things, Cloud deals, strategic information governance, and global compliance issues.

Mr. Serwin, an internationally recognized thought leader on privacy, cybersecurity, privacy rights, privacy policy, information governance, and information sharing, advises multinationals and emerging companies on some of their most sensitive data security incidents and privacy enforcement and litigation matters, and has handled numerous high-profile investigations before the Federal Trade Commission and the Office of Civil Rights. Advising a diverse set of industries, he has particular expertise in health care privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance with FTC requirements, among other issues.

Mr. Serwin serves on the board of directors of the private sector of the federally funded National Cyber Forensic Training Alliance (NCFTA), an entity that functions as a conduit between private industry and law enforcement, with a core mission to identify, mitigate, and neutralize cybercrime. In addition, he serves an advisor to the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Asymmetric Warfare, and is the CEO and executive director of the Lares Institute, a think tank focused on privacy, information superiority, and national security issues.

"Andy is a world class leader in privacy law and regulation. He is unmatched in his expertise in cybersecurity and with the Federal Trade Commission," said Miriam Wugmeister, chair of MoFo's Global Privacy and Data Security Group. "I am confident that his experience, coupled with his leadership qualities, will help to lead our practice to even greater success, at a time when every organization is grappling with operational and reputational risks associated with breaches of privacy and proprietary information."

"Our global privacy and data security practice has served as trusted counsel to many of the world's largest multinational companies for more than five decades," said Mr. Serwin, a partner in MoFo's San Diego and Washington, D.C. offices. "I am honored to help lead the practice together with Miriam as we continue to deliver superior client service."

A noted public speaker and author, Mr. Serwin has written the leading treatise on privacy and security, "Information Security and Privacy: A Guide to Federal and State Law and Compliance" and "Information Security and Privacy: A Guide to International Law and Compliance" (West 2006-2014), collectively a 5,000-page, three-volume global treatise that examines all aspects of privacy and security laws, published by Thomson-Reuters.

He has received numerous awards and accolades, including:

  • The only lawyer ever to be named to Security Magazine's prestigious "25 Most Influential Industry Thought Leaders"
  • Ranked by Computerworld as one of the "top global privacy advisors"
  • Ranked as one of the top privacy and data security attorneys in Chambers USA, Chambers Global, and Legal 500

On January 28, MoFo, along with the National Cyber Security Alliance and Lares Institute, will convene a day-long event in San Diego to address privacy issues surrounding the burgeoning area of multiconnectivity known as the Internet of Things. Speakers will include chief privacy officers from eBay, Farmers Insurance, Exelon, ADT, and other major organizations. Click here for details on the program.
