MOUNTAIN VIEW (dpa-AFX) - Facebook might be hosting news from major news providers in the near future. The move would help news providers to reach directly to 1.4 billion Facebook users, and the advertisement displayed along with the news would help news providers to earn extra money.
According to media reports, Facebook has been in serious discussions with news organizations to woo them and to alleviate their apprehensions.
The New York Times, BuzzFeed and National Geographic are reportedly the initial partners. Testing of the news content on Facebook is expected to begin in a few months.
Earlier in mid February, Chris Cox, chief product officer of Facebook had said that the social media giant was planning to host news content that would otherwise go on a publisher's own website. He also noted that Facebook wanted to make reading news on a smart phone a better experience.
