Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is produced by the polymerization of vinylidene difluoride. PVDF coating is a specialty plastic that belongs to the fluoropolymers family. It has a fairly low melting point, thus making it beneficial for certain applications and at the same time this property limits its applications. It is used in applications that require a high level of purity and strength. PVDF coating is less expensive than many other types of fluoropolymer coatings, and it is less dense. Its applications are in closed cell foam, pipes, tubes, sheets, wire insulation, tubing, and plates. It is applied through injection, welding and molding.
PVDF coatings do not react with the majority of solvents and chemicals which is a perfect combination for processing chemicals. In addition, they offer excellent resistance to wear and abrasions, resistance to weathering with high dielectric strength, and can extinguish themselves in the case of a fire. Other properties of PVDF include good color retention, strong piezoelectricity, and gloss. Other applications of PVDF coating include fishing industry, semiconductor industry, defence industry, medical industry, and few more, but these applications have a smaller market share. PVDF coatings are also often used in the manufacture of lithium ion batteries while producing composite electrodes.
