Global Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Market 2015-2019 with Eaton, General Electric, Itron, Landis+Gyr & Schneider Electric Dominating

DUBLIN, July 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/chxhb8/global_advanced) has announced the addition of the "Global Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Market 2015-2019" report to their offering.

The global advanced metering infrastructure market to grow at a CAGR of 9.0% over the period 2014-2019.

An AMI refers to an infrastructure ranging from smart meters to two-way communication networks through various communication and data processing channels. It comprises of all the applications that permit the assembly and flow of energy usage on real-time basis. It makes two-way communications with clients possible. It is considered as the backbone of the smart grid because all the operations taking place in metering and load flow are regulated through an AMI. The main functions of an AMI include remote meter reading for error-free data, identifying energy system problem, load outlining, energy inspection, and reduction of load during shedding.

Regulatory authorities in various countries such as China, Italy, India, and the US have exhibited interest in the installation of smart energy meters and MDM systems over the years. Policy regulators worldwide are constantly developing frameworks and policies to adopt smart meters and implement MDM software. Most of these policies are implemented by power utilities in different countries, which has led to an upsurge in the number of smart energy meter installations worldwide. Countries such as the US and Canada have witnessed large-scale deployment of smart energy meters on the back of increased support from their respective governments.

According to the report, developing countries, especially India and China, face the major threat of an increase in power losses owing to the increase in power theft. Smart energy meters installed under AMI are well equipped to counter the meter tampering and help utilities avoid loss of revenue. A reduction in the electricity theft will help achieve improved and efficient energy management. There have been cases where utilities have lost 10% of their potential revenue because of electricity theft. The anti-tampering abilities of the AMI help counter such issues, thus driving the growth of the global AMI market. Faults associated with distribution systems can also lead to power losses. Some transformers do not have low-voltage automation systems, making it cumbersome to measure the loss of energy during transmission.

Further, the report states that issues related to data management and meter replacement has been a major challenge for this market.
