Tönnies Takes Over Danish Company Tican A/S

RHEDA-WIEDENBRÜCK, Germany, December 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

  • Tönnies Holding takes over Danish pork marketer - subject to antitrust investigation
  • An excellent global market position and high quality products form the basis for the successful continuation of the traditional Danish company
  • Lines of business will be adapted to Tönnies structures
  • With this, Tönnies is consistently advancing its course of internationalisation

On 1 October 2015, the Tönnies Holding took over the Danish slaughterhouse and meat processing company Tican A/S but subject to antitrust approval. After the two parties signed an outline contract for negotiations for the takeover by Tönnies at the beginning of November, agreement has now been reached. Formal consent by Tican's cooperative owners will be given at an extraordinary general meeting on 30 December 2015. The takeover will then be investigated with regard to its compatibility with antitrust law. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

Reinforcement of Tönnies internationalisation strategy

With the takeover, Tönnies is consistently continuing its growth strategy and international orientation. Partner Clemens Tönnies: "This is a very import step in the further internationalisation of our company. Tican is well established globally and has an excellent reputation for high quality. We will certainly need to restructure the company and we want to integrate Tican as quickly as possible. However, we have reached an agreement which is good for all sides."

Tican's activities in Denmark, the United Kingdom and Poland fit in excellently with the future growth strategy of Tönnies. As well as this, over many years Tican has gained an outstanding position in many export markets in the Far East. Especially in Japan and China, the Tican brand stands for the very highest standards of quality and safety.

Established company with tradition

At five production locations in Denmark, the United Kingdom and Poland, Tican A/S currently has a production capacity of about two million pigs per year and employs about 2,300 people. In the financial year 2013/2014 Tican A/S achieved sales of € 737.1 million.
A part of the agreement is the continuation of the cooperation with the cooperative Tican A.m.b.a. This will ensure long-term security of the raw material base for the important Danish pork market.

Restructuring and expansion of core business at Tican

"With its tradition and its good global reputation, Tican is an ideal addition to the Tönnies group. Its orientation and quality of the products form a good basis for a positive future. Because of this, Tönnies will take over Tican completely", says Frank Duffe, Manager of Division Meat at Tönnies.

The focus is now on the optimum restructuring of the Tican business divisions so that it can be quickly and successfully integrated into the Tönnies Group. The details of this restructuring will be worked out over the coming weeks, after the closing has taken place.
Tönnies will reinforce and expand the Tican core businesses. Among other things, the range will be concentrated, with the objective of increasing production figures in the successful core businesses.

Favoritenwechsel
