The first driveshaft links the rear of the transmission to a gearbox mounted in the center of the boat. The second driveshaft extends from the gearbox to the rear and out the bottom of the boat to where the propeller is mounted.

According to the report, the emergence of two-speed gearbox to emissions will be a growth driving factor for this market. two-speed gearboxes have proved to be beneficial monetarily as well as environmentally. The gearboxes can serve vessels having multiple operational modes or reduced transit speed, including RoPax ferries, offshore support vessels, and tug boats. The two-speed gearboxes were observed to consume 8% less fuel than single mechanical propulsion systems. The reduction in fuel consumption that these type of gearboxes entail can go up to 15% with similar reductions in the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SOx).
