Prominent Orthodontists Report Improved Predictability of Clinical Outcomes When Using AcceleDent in Conjunction with Aligners

HOUSTON, Sept. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --Orthodontists across Europe who have integrated AcceleDent® into their aligner treatment protocols report improved predictability of clinical outcomes resulting in a superior orthodontic experience. AcceleDent employs patented SoftPulse Technology® that more efficiently and effectively translates orthodontic forces from braces or aligners thereby increasing the predictability of tooth movement. Manufactured by OrthoAccel® Technologies, Inc., AcceleDent, which has also received FDA clearance, bears the CE mark as a Class 2A medical device in accordance with the Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC/Annex V by the London-based British Standards Institute.

Dr. Tommaso Castroflorio and Dr. Francesco Garino, two highly respected orthodontists and lecturers, say that AcceleDent, when used for 20 minutes a day by patients, improves aligner tracking and predictability. Invisalign Platinum Elite Providers, Castroflorio and Garino are well-published orthodontic researchers who serve as founding partners and board members of the European Aligner Society.

"I offer AcceleDent to my aligner patients because the pulsatile force helps better seat the aligners so that the teeth track more predictably," said Castroflorio, who is a professor at University of Torino's School of Orthodontics. His practice, Studio Associato Icardi Castroflorio Odontoiatri has two locations -one in Torino and the other in Neive. "The biomechanical forces of the aligners and attachments are only effective if the aligners seat perfectly on the teeth, so having patients use AcceleDent during aligner therapy helps ensure the forces designed into the aligners are delivered efficiently and effectively."

Castroflorio says that the clinical benefits of AcceleDent are significant and that patients are attracted to it because they get the beautiful smile they want more quickly and with less discomfort. One of his patients, a 25-year-old female, presented as a Class II malocclusion with a transversal deficiency and excessive 10+ mm overjet. The patient is a makeup artist who travels frequently between the United Kingdom and the United States so she was interested in a comfortable and efficient orthodontic solution. Castroflorio prescribed aligner therapy with AcceleDent. Her treatment included 60 aligners with a projected duration of 30 months without AcceleDent. With AcceleDent however, the patient completed treatment in 18 months without any midcourse corrections or refinement aligners.

"This case demonstrates that AcceleDent is effective for even complex treatments and that it creates convenience for busy patients," said Castroflorio, who added that the patient was instructed to change aligners every seven days and, to accommodate her busy travel schedule, she only needed to return to the office every four-to-six months for monitoring. "AcceleDent allows my staff and me to remain one step ahead throughout the entire treatment process, creating a more desirable treatment experience for everyone, especially the patient."

Similarly, Garino, a Diplomate of the European Board of Orthodontics who practices at Studio Ortodontico Associato Dr. Garino in Torino, says that AcceleDent creates added efficiency for his practice.

"AcceleDent improves tooth tracking, allowing us to achieve a clinical outcome that more closely aligns with our virtual projections," said Garino. "Specifically, when an aligner treatment protocol is complex, AcceleDent reduces the number and duration of aligner refinements while also reducing the pain patients experience when changing their aligners."

During a consult with a 14-year-old patient and his family, Garino offered AcceleDent after noticing that the teenager was highly motivated to complete correction of a Class I malocclusion. The patient also presented with crowding on both arches and a deepbite.

Instructed to change aligners every week because of the accelerated treatment, the patient completed treatment with 28 aligners in just eight months with no refinement aligners. Garino predicted that standard treatment for this non-extraction expansion case would have taken 14 months.

"Because the patient was compliant in using AcceleDent 20 minutes a day, treatment progressed more predictably and his treatment completed faster. The patient also reported that he did not experience any pain when changing his aligners," added Garino. When assessing retention at the patient's one-year follow up appointment, Garino reported that results remained stable.

According to the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, AcceleDent is the most common accelerated treatment technique used by orthodontists. The innovative technology is currently available in 300 orthodontic locations in Europe and in more than 3,300 orthodontic locations in North America.
