TOKYO (dpa-AFX) - Japanese auto giant Toyota Wednesday announced a voluntary recall of Toyota Prius cars globally due to a potential roll-away issue.
The company is recalling 340,000 units of the Prius globally, including 212,000 in Japan and 92,000 units of the 2016 and 2017 models in the U.S. The balance would be recalled in Europe, Australia and other regions.
The Japanese automaker said the recalled cars have a possibility that the parking brake could become inoperative. If this occurs and the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than 'Park' while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
According to reports, Toyota has received several reports of crashes, injuries and deaths due to issue. However, Toyota has not verified or commented on those reports.
Toyota said its dealers 'will add clips on the top of the brake cable dust boots to prevent the cable from becoming inoperative at no cost to customers.' All owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified in November.
