The global membrane bioreactors market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 10.3% during the period 2017-2021.

The report, Global Membrane Bioreactors Market 2017-2021, has been prepared based on an in-depth market analysis with inputs from industry experts. The report covers the market landscape and its growth prospects over the coming years. The report also includes a discussion of the key vendors operating in this market.

One trend in the market is depletion of freshwater resources. Freshwater resource makes up only a single-digit share of the total water worldwide. The resources of freshwater are depleting owing to the rise in water extraction from aquifers. The rate of water extraction from underground source is higher than the replenished rate.

According to the report, one driver in the market is rapid industrialization. The increase in industrial production and standard of living has led to an increase in the use of water in countries. This is acting as a major driver for industrialization. Industrialization refers to the changes in the economic and social structure of the society, which is transforming an agrarian-based society into an industrial society. Numerous industries such as power, mining, construction, oil and gas, refineries, construction, F&B, steel manufacturing, electronics, and pharmaceuticals are contaminating the water resources.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is membrane fouling. MBRs are highly prone to fouling that generally occurs on the membrane surface or within the pores, thereby decreasing the efficiency of the overall system. This has resulted mainly because of water impurities such as microbial impurities, salts, hydrocarbons, and clay or silica. Microbial contamination of feed water gradually results in a biofilm on the membrane surface causing biofouling, while the salts cause scaling. Hydrocarbons in the water result in organic fouling, whereas clay or silica causes colloidal fouling on membrane surface.
