Pegless construction
Earthwork operations involved surveying the rails on all sides of an alignment to decide on the design and slopes. After the removal of bulk material, survey pegs were required to trim each alignment. However, with machine controllers in the equipment, the operator has real-time monitoring of design within the machine, and traditional survey pegging is not required. Design information is loaded into the equipment, and the operator can view real-time cutting and filling values display inside the machine cabin.
The monitoring is feasible for viewing horizontal and vertical designing of each millimeter of the operation. The working procedure of machine controllers is flexible enough to be altered by the operator as per the requirement. Additional information such as cross slope, the horizontal distance from excavator's bucket to the toe of a batter, can also be viewed.
According to Raghav Bharadwaj Shivaswamy, a lead analyst at Technavio for automation research, "Wireless mobile machine controllers can work independently without any survey pegging, and thus they provide significant cost advantages. They reduce dependency on labor, equipment, and survey consumables, and fasten the project by saving time for other important tasks, thereby increasing the uptime of the project."
Easily updating unplanned work
Projects in the end-user industry are susceptible to major delays and deviate from the initial plan. Traditionally, changes in designs during the progress of the project require availability of the survey crew for re-marking and making the changes. This process not only delays the project but also carries a risk of missing important aspects in the design. However, with the help of machine controllers, information regarding any change in the design is available in the field, which saves time for surveying.
"Machine controllers enable design changes to be updated in the system, and they can be implemented instantly without waiting for the conventional survey. Similarly, earlier designs can be removed to retain the latest information in the system. Also, it enables better planning and reduces the downtime of machine and field tremendously," says Raghav.
Increased safety of machines and personnel
Construction sites are hives of activity with numerous processes being carried out using heavy machinery. Tightening of construction schedules leads to multiple operations being carried out at the same time and in the same work area. Moreover, the work areas are often difficult to access due to relatively confined spaces, thus making the construction site a serious safety hazard for surveyors walking around in such conditions.
The use of machine mobile control reduces the need for on-the-ground survey and construction crew string lining, thus reducing the probability of workplace injury. With machine guided construction, real-time levels are displayed to the operator inside the cab, and there is no need for grade checkers, string lines, or survey stakes. Thus, this scenario demonstrates a safer construction method than traditional construction methods.
