Technavio has published a new report on the global PH meter market from 2017-2021. (Graphic: Business Wire)
The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global PH metermarketfor 2017-2021. A pH meter is a scientific device used to calculate the hydrogen-ion activity in water-based solutions. It is used to detect the alkalinity or acidity of a solution, on a numeric scale where seven is neutral.
The growing incidences of waterborne diseases across different regions have resulted in the increased demand for clean water. The necessity for clean water has made water governing authorities in different regions to adopt strict measures related to water quality. To eliminate the distribution of contaminated water to the population, new water treatment plants are being set up across various regions.

Stringent rules on water quality
Various environmental agencies and water governing bodies of respective countries have set certain parameters that water distribution agencies must follow to ensure the distribution of high-quality drinking water to the public. Governments of different countries have also set drinking water quality parameters.
Gaurav Mohindru, a lead test and measurement research analyst at Technavio, says, "Potable water may contain many harmful substances, and it is the responsibility of water distribution agencies to ensure the proper purification of water coming from the source. There are no universally accepted international standards set for drinking water, and different countries have various drinking standards."
Increased incidences of waterborne diseases
Pathogenic microorganisms in water cause waterborne diseases, such as diarrhea, cholera, guinea worm disease, typhoid, and dysentery. These diseases are usually spread during bathing, washing, drinking, in the preparation of food, or the consumption of food that is infected. A significant percentage of waterborne diseases is caused by the consumption of unsafe water.
"Apart from water distribution channels, private and government laboratories conduct tests on the distributed water to prevent any outbreak of diseases. The inspection by different government agencies to check the quality of water to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases is expected to increase the demand for water testing equipment, such as pH meters," adds Gaurav
Preventing corrosion in pipelines and equipment used in industries
The extreme acidic or basic nature of water does not only have harmful effects on humans but also on industrial equipment that uses water. Pipelines and high-cost equipment, such as boilers, evaporators, and condensers, which are mostly used in chemical, power, and oil and gas industries, are susceptible to the corrosive action of extreme acidic or basic water. Hence, industries make use of pH meters to check the acidity or alkalinity of water.
In addition, it helps industries decide whether a water purification system should be installed or not. Rapid industrialization and increase in the number of energy power plants are expected in 2017-2021 to meet the energy demand of the increasing population. The demand for energy power plants will increase the number of installations of condensers, pipelines, and boilers that require clean water.
