*PRESS RELEASE*
*Prof. Dr. Thorsten Arnhold receives Thomas A. Edison Award of the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)*
Waldenburg, 22 October 2018 - The International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) awarded Prof. Dr. Thorsten Arnhold, Chairman of the IECEx System and
responsible for the development of new technologies at R. STAHL, the Thomas
A. Edison Award. IEC Vice President Shawn Powlson (USA) presented Arnhold
with the prize at this year's IEC General Meeting, which is currently taking
place in Busan, South Korea.
Arnhold, who has been Chairman of IECEx for five years and who has been
working for more than two decades for the expert in explosion protection R.
STAHL in technical leadership functions, received this year's award as a
recognition of his achievements in the enhancement of conformity assessments
within the context of international standardization in explosion protection.
During Arnhold's past tenure as Chairman, the IECEx conformity assessment
system has gained a leading position worldwide in the assessment and
certification of explosion-protected equipment, services and personal
expertise for potentially explosive industrial environments. "I am very
pleased to receive this award and I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all members of the IECEx System for their dedicated and reliable work.
The award is both an honour and an incentive for me to continue my
activities for IECEx and the IEC", Arnhold said after the award ceremony.
The IEC is the worldwide operating organization in the field of technical
standardization and conformity assessment of electrotechnical and electronic
products. It has more than 160 member states. Once a year, the Thomas A.
Edison Award is granted to honor exceptional contributions to the further
development and strengthening of international standardization and its
anchoring in international business life. With its testing and certification
activities, the IECEx System covers the entire life cycle of electrical and
electronic equipment in safety-critical plants in the process industry. It
thus ensures the worldwide implementation of a high level of safety in all
industries where hazards from uncontrolled explosions may occur, in
particular the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. In
addition, internationally recognized certificates ensure a largely smooth
and efficient global movement of goods and promote the development of global
value-added flows.
