BRUSSELS (AFX) - European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said he did not raise the state of Italy's public finances in his meeting today with the country's new prime minister, Romano Prodi.
'No, we have not talked about the Italian public accounts,' Barroso said at joint a news conference Prodi, his predecessor as commission president.
'There will be plenty of other opportunities to do that,' he said.
Earlier, Italian daily La Repubblica said Prodi is expected to ask for a one-year delay to the 2007 deadline for reducing the country's deficit below the stability and growth pact's limit of 3 pct of GDP. afxbrussels@afxnews.com vm/ma COPYRIGHT Copyright AFX News Limited 2005.
