TOKYO (AFX) - Honda Motor Co is aiming to boost its domestic automobile sales to 820,000 units in 2007 under a three-year sales plan, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Saturday without citing sources.
That translates into a roughly 10 pct increase from the 740,000 estimated for 2004. The carmaker aims to have its auto sales in Japan rise to 770,000 in 2005 and to 790,000 in 2006.
The firm hopes to meet these targets partly by raising customer retention to 70 pct by 2007 from the current level of around 60 pct.
The automaker estimates that the number of Honda owners in Japan will grow from roughly 8.8 mln people as of the end of 2004 to more than 10 mln in three years.
Under the three-year sales plan, improved business efficiency stemming from information technology use will improve the ratio of pretax profit to sales at the 1,000 or so affiliated dealerships to 3 pct from slightly more than 1 pct currently.
