The sale contract was signed at the end of September last year.
Details of the sale price were not disclosed, although press reports have suggested the value of the deal is roughly 500 mln eur.
"The closing of this transaction is a significant step for RWE. This completes our focussing on the core business areas of electricity, gas and water," said chief executive officer of RWE, Harry Roels.
Earlier today, the cartel office said it is giving conditional approval to Remondis Beteiligungs GmbH's plan to acquire RWE's environment and recycling unit RWE Umwelt AG.
The regulator said Remondis must divest its stake in Interseroh AG and the merged entity has to give up its shareholding interests in some other unspecified companies.
The new entity must also give up its contracts on collection and transport of used glass, processing of old glass, as well as recycling of refrigeration units, the cartel office said.
