SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) -- Canada's benchmark index rose Friday with gains from the energy and metals sectors offsetting word from one of the country's biggest companies of a substantial quarterly loss and another round of financial restatements.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained 68.28 points, or 0.58%. The S&P/TSX 60 Index of blue chips rose 4.07 points, or 0.61%. The S&P/TSX Venture Composite index of small cap picked up 3.05 points, or 0.12%.
The Nasdaq Canada Index of U.S.-listed Canadian stocks closed up 3.82 points to 505.37.
The energy and metals and mining sectors led gains, rising about 1% points to 332.21, and 1.04% to 427.39, respectively.
Shares of Bema Gold lost 3 Canadian cents to C$4.77 and EnCana slipped 13 Canadian cents to C$49.72.
The telecom services sector lost ground, slipping 0.21% to 80.38, weighed down by Nortel Networks . Nortel shares fell 3% to C$3.50.
The Toronto-based telecommunications equipment maker reported a preliminary fourth-quarter loss of $2.2 billion and said it will embark on yet another restatement of its financial results.
Research In Motion gained 45 Canadian cents to finish at $93.45. The BlackBerry handheld device maker said it acquired Ascendent Systems, a San Jose, Calif. company that makes a service that allows both a mobile phone and a desktop phone to use the same phone number. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
On the economic front, Canada's employment rate in February fell 0.2 percentage points to 6.4%. The result matched a 30-year low set last November, according to Statistics Canada.
