SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) -- Internet stocks were mixed in Wednesday trading, with sector bellwethers showing some weakness.
The Dow Jones Internet Index was up 0.3% to 93.67, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index gained 15.94 points to 2,311.84.
Bellwethers Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. each lost more than 1%, while eBay Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. traded off less than 1% by the market close.
In a Tuesday hearing in federal district court in San Jose, Calif., Justice Department lawyers significantly scaled back their request for access to Google's search data, a partial victory for Google in its attempt to shield users' search results from U.S. government investigators.
Overstock.com Inc. shares lost 1% on the heels of gaining 12% in two straight sessions.
On the upside, Akamai Technologies Inc. gained 4%, while aQuantive Inc. and Digital River Inc. shares moved fractionally to the upside. Each company made presentations at the J.P. Morgan Global Internet Conference in New York earlier this week.
