FRANKFURT (AFX) - E.ON AG chief executive Wulf Bernotat told Die Welt he will discuss atomic energy's future role in Germany at tomorrow's meeting between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the country's major utilities.
'We cannot have a meaningful discussion on economic or environmental issues if we avoid the atomic energy issue,' Bernotat told the newspaper in an interview to appear in tomorrow's edition.
The chief executive said he does not expect any concrete decisions to emerge from tomorrow's 'Energy Summit'.
'I would be very pleased if we can agree on a road map for the development of a long-term energy plan,' Bernotat told the newspaper.
He said if all sides work diligently on the matter, it could be completed this year.
Bernotat also reiterated that he is confident E.ON's 29.1 bln eur offer for Endesa SA will succeed despite opposition from the Spanish government.
Separately, Die Welt reported that Germany's four largest utilities will defend themselves against accusations of insider trading on the Leipzig, Germany European Energy Exchange.
Industry sources told the newspaper that the utilities will publish detailed reports on their websites showing the production capacity of their power plants.
Consumer advocates have accused the utilities of using inside information on the production capacity of their power plants to profit from trades on the EEX.
