BUDAPEST (AFX) - Hungary's Socialist-led coalition held a commanding lead after general elections and seemed set to become the country's first government to win re-election since the demise of communism in 1989.
The coalition led by Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany was on track to win an absolute majority with a projected total of 209 seats in the 386-member parliament, the national election commission said after 77 pct of the votes were counted.
The opposition conservative Fidesz party was projected to have 165 members and the smaller right-wing MDF party to win 11 seats.
The coalition headed by Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany had gained a decisive lead in the first round of voting on April 9 and Sunday's ballots were for 110 undecided constituencies.
Voter turnout was over 60 pct, according to the national election commission. newsdesk@afxnews.com afp/cml COPYRIGHT Copyright AFX News Limited 2005. All rights reserved.
