NEW YORK (AFX) - Workers at Elk Valley Coal's Elkview mine in southeast British Columbia could strike as soon as Wednesday, the coal partnership's owners said Friday after receiving a strike notice from the workers' union.
The contract between the mine and the workers, represented by the United Steel Workers of America, expired Oct. 31.
Elk Valley Coal will continue to try to reach a new contract agreement with the workers at its Elkview Operations, according to partnership owners Fording Canadian Coal Trust and Teck Cominco Ltd.
According to a company Web site, the Elkview mine has about 56,800 acres of coal and has operated for more than 30 years. Current annual production capacity of the mine is 6 million tons of metallurgical coal.
