(AFX) - Highlights magazine, which turns 60 years old this month, printed its billionth issue this week. Here's a look at the magazine's popular features and when they debuted:
1946: 'Hidden Pictures,' which appeared in the magazine's first issue, challenges readers to find the smaller hidden objects -- needle, spoon, teapot -- within a full
page illustration.
1948: 'Goofus and Gallant' shows children proper manners through the illustrated actions of mischievous Goofus, who adopts pets without asking his parents and bosses his friends around, and nice Gallant, who lives up to his promises and shares his snacks.
1951: 'The Timbertoes' illustrates the lives of a family of little wooden people, Ma, Pa, Mabel and Tommy Timbertoe, and their dog, Spot.
2004: 'Gallant Kids,' a real-life take on 'Goofus and Gallant,' recognizes children who help their communities with service projects, such as collecting clothes for infants from low
income families or gathering books for homeless shelters.
2005: 'Ask Arizona,' a story series, features a fictional girl named Arizona who writes an advice column for her friends using her own experience in dealing with common problems children face.
