HANNIBAL, Ohio (AFX) - Aluminum maker Ormet Corp. and striking steelworkers said Friday they reached a tentative deal to end a year-and-a-half old strike in southeastern Ohio.
About 1,300 members of the United Steelworkers of America went on strike at two Ormet facilities after the company received permission from a bankruptcy judge in 2004 to void its labor contracts with the union.
The company, based in Canonsburg, Pa., said the contract included a signing bonus, raises and profit sharing. Neither side disclosed details.
The deal covers workers from an aluminum rolling facility and an aluminum reduction facility in Hannibal, about 115 miles east of Columbus along the Ohio-West Virginia line.
Ormet still needs to negotiate a new deal for electricity service similar to what other industrial users have in the region before the company can restart the reduction facility, which turned ore into aluminum for processing, the union said.
Ormet emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year, and has since sold the rolling mill.
