SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AFX) - Casual dining chain Denny's Corp. on Thursday said June same-store sales fell 1.3 percent, as higher average checks couldn't offset a decline in diner traffic.
During the month, the average receipt rose 3.5 percent, but the number of guests fell 4.7 percent.
The trend has held true all year: Second-quarter same-store sales dipped 0.4 percent on higher average checks and weaker guest counts as well. Year to date, however, same-store sales are up 2.1 percent.
Same-store sales refer to sales at stores open at least one year, a key performance metric used by retailers.
Denny's is scheduled to report second-quarter financial results on July 27. The company's stock fell 8 cents to close at $3.55 on the Nasdaq, then gained 5 cents in aftermarket activity.
