WARSAW (AFX) - Poland's prime minister in waiting, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said he will promote deputy finance minister Stanislaw Kluza to the finance minister post when he takes over as head of the government.
'I have invited Kluza (to be finance minister) because I believe we must give a chance to the new generation of economists,' Kaczynski said at a news conference.
Kaczynski said Kluza, 34, a former chief economist for the major Polish bank BGZ, would be an 'excellent candidate to continue the policies of (former finance minister) Zyta Gilowska'.
Gilowska was fired two weeks ago amid allegations, which she denied, of links with the former communist secret service.
She was immediately replaced by Pawel Wojciechowski, economic advisor to the outgoing Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz.
Kaczynski, who is set to take over from Marcinkiewicz, also said he hoped to see Gilowska return to government.
'I am still awaiting the solution to Mrs Gilowska's problems. When they are resolved, and I firmly believe they will be, she will return to government, assuming of course that she wishes to,' he said.
Yesterday Kaczynski, the identical twin brother of the country's president, sought to reassure the markets of the stability of Poland's finances.
'We make every effort to preserve the positive trends in the economy: an increase in industrial production, in exports and growth, and the stability of the zloty,' he said.
Kaczynski also said his government would continue the public finance reforms begun under Gilowska.
Marcinkiewicz announced his intention to resign on Friday, just nine months into the job. newsdesk@afxnews.com afp/cml/cml COPYRIGHT Copyright AFX News Limited 2005. All rights reserved.
