DUBLIN, Ohio (AFX) - Hamburger chain Wendy's International Inc. said Tuesday it expects to post a 4.7 percent jump in August same-store sales -- its strongest monthly same-store sales performance in two years.
The company had previously indicated growth in August same-store sales -- or sales at stores open at least one year -- would exceed the 3.6 percent increase seen in July. The figure is a key gauge of a retailer's performance.
Wendy's attributed the gain to its marketing strategy -- including new products such as Frescata deli-meat sandwiches and advertising -- which it says 'is revitalizing the Wendy's brand.'
August is the middle month of Wendy's third quarter. In the April-June period, the company had its first quarterly growth in same-store sales in nearly two years.
Shares of Wendy's fell 52 cents to finish at $63.35 on the New York Stock Exchange.
