BOCA RATON, Fla. (AFX) - RailAmerica Inc., a short-line railroad, said Tuesday total carloads fell 2.1 percent in August, hurt by lower shipments of coal, lumber, forest and other products.
The railroad said carloads fell to 107,025 during the month from 109,287 in last year's August.
Counting only results from railroads operating more than a year, RailAmerica said August carloads fell half a percent on a 'same railroad' basis.
Year to date, RailAmerica said total carloads are down 2.5 percent to 846,497. On a 'same railroad' basis, adjusting for acquisitions and sales, carloads are down 1.4 percent.
RailAmerica shares closed up 5 cents at $10.19 on the New York Stock Exchange.
