(AP) - Here are some ways to protect marrying couples and their guests:
Insurance: A number of companies offer specific insurance for weddings, covering such items as lost or damaged dresses, cancellation or postponement due to weather, military deployment or death in the family. There also is an option from Fireman's Fund that covers 'change of heart' or cold feet.
Insurance is just one protective step that engaged couples should consider. Others include preparing for everything from property thieves to identity theft, said Michael McCann, a former United Nations security chief. McCann founded McCann Protective Services, a New York City firm that offers security services such as protection, crisis management, intelligence services and security awareness programs.
Other tips from McCann:
Gift Protection: Designate a place for gifts to be collected and someone to watch over them during the ceremony and reception. Guests should not leave personal items, such as purses, unattended or out of sight.
Home Protection: Wedding announcements can alert thieves when a home is vacant. Ask a neighbor or friend to watch the house.
Internet Announcements: In this age of identity theft, couples should be mindful of posting personal information on Web sites that cater to wedding announcements. Pare down the posting to the bare details.
'Everything has to be done reasonably and balanced,' McCann said. 'You don't want security to be an overriding factor, but it should be a consideration.'
